Comfort Zones

I’m not sure all comfort zones are good.

I know, I know, you are probably thinking this is just crazy talk, Glenn has gone off the deep end, and this is just one of those idiotic things he is going to write about… maybe it is one of his semi-clever jokes and he will bring this all around again so all comfort zones are good.

Nope.

A baby is in a comfort zone in the womb; eventually the baby must leave the comfort zone in order to grow. We tend to find ourselves in our own comfort zones naturally, almost falling into them daily; eventually we must leave our comfort zones in order to grow.

America was not founded in a comfort zone; it was founded in a war zone. Slavery was not abolished in a comfort zone; it was abolished in a war zone. We enjoy freedom in our comfort zone; we earn freedom in a war zone.

Christ left His comfort zone on the throne to walk among men and call them out of their comfort zones. His ministry is always beyond anyone’s comfort zone. Christ died well out of His comfort zone to call us to the one true comfort zone we should have: The Cross.

Not all comfort zones are good, but there is one. There is one comfort zone which brings the peace of Christ, the love of God, and the grace of salvation; one comfort zone as a path for our relationship with God; one comfort zone shredding the barrier between God and man. We find this truth in Hebrews 10, beginning in verse 19.

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place… (could this be the comfort zone God calls us into?) …by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain (this is the path Christ established on the Cross, the path leading out of separation from God and into God’s presence… could this be the comfort zone God calls us into?) …let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith… (a one true comfort zone?)having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

The comfort zone questions in the above passage recognizes we must leave our comfort zones to enter into God’s presence and find a new comfort zone with Him. This is not easy for some… almost impossible for others, but eventually we must leave our comfort zones in order to grow. Isn’t that what ministry is all about? Getting people to move out of their comfort zones and find a new one with Him?

I encourage you to take a moment today and turn your focus on Jesus. Ask Him for the strength to move out of your comfort zone and move closer to Him; and also ask Him for the strength to encourage others.

Yes, I know… it’s not part of your comfort zone.

    Can you tell me if there is any kind of a medical reason for a person to have a comfort zone?

  • glennsasscer Says:

    Hello Charlene;
    Per my medical dictionary, we have the following definition for comfort zone: comfort zone (Per Medical Dictionary) The temperature range between 28° and 30°C or 82.5° and 86°F at which the naked body maintains heat balance without shivering or sweating; in the clothed body, the range is between 13° and 21°C or 55.5° and 70°F. As for beyond the physical, the mental state and emotional state both have comfort zones defined in differing ways - one might be the state of rest while the other might be the state of peace. Step out of any of these comfort zones and we become tense. Is this the sort of answer you are seeking, or are you asking a differnent sort of question?

    Glenn
